Friday’s conversation centered around ambition.
But not the version of ambition most people think about.
Not achievement. Not status. Not accumulation.
The discussion kept returning to a more fundamental question:
What is actually pulling you forward?
The things we chase at twenty often look very different from the things we chase at fifty. The destination shifts. The deeper drivers remain.
This Week’s Panel:
– Greg Lapin: Former law enforcement officer, tactical operator, instructor, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt.
– Sam Laird: Former Royal Marine Commando, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, and leadership facilitator.
Key Insights from Our “Advance or Anchor” Discussion:
1. Ambition Evolves
One of the strongest themes from both Greg and Sam was that ambition changes shape over time.
What begins as proving ourselves often becomes serving others. What begins as achievement often becomes contribution. The fire remains. The target changes.
The people who continue growing aren’t necessarily more ambitious than they were twenty years ago. They’re often ambitious about different things.
2. Success Creates New Questions
Greg reflected on the reality that achieving a goal rarely delivers the final answer we expect.
Instead, success often creates a new question:
What now?
The conversation repeatedly returned to the idea that growth is less about arriving somewhere and more about becoming someone.
The destination changes.
The process continues.
3. The Seasons Change
Sam spoke about the importance of recognizing the different seasons of life.
The ambitions that serve a young parent may not be the same ambitions that serve an empty nester.
The ambitions that help build a career may not be the same ambitions that help build a legacy.
Growth requires more than movement.
It requires knowing when the season has changed.
4. Curiosity Outlasts Achievement
One of the most interesting threads emerged as the group discussed what remains once major goals have been achieved.
Both Greg and Shaun kept returning to curiosity.
Achievements eventually lose their novelty.
Curiosity doesn’t.
There is always another question.
Another perspective.
Another layer underneath the thing we thought we understood.
Curiosity keeps us moving long after accomplishment stops motivating us.
5. Gratitude Completes The Cycle
As the discussion moved toward legacy and contribution, the conversation naturally landed on gratitude.
Sam reflected on the influence of mentors, teammates, family members, and the people who shaped his path.
Greg echoed a similar sentiment.
No accomplishment exists in isolation.
Every success sits on top of countless investments made by other people.
The older we get, the easier it becomes to see the shoulders we were standing on all along.
Final Thought
Ambition is powerful.
But ambition without reflection eventually becomes hunger without direction.
The goal is not to accumulate accomplishments forever.
The goal is to become someone capable of carrying them well.
